A Journey from History: The Origins of Coffee in India
The story of Indian filter coffee has deep roots in the lush landscapes of South India. It all began in the 1600s with a Sufi saint named Baba Budan, who embarked on a pilgrimage to Mecca. On his return journey through Mocha, a Yemeni port renowned for its coffee beans, he secretly brought back seven precious beans, cleverly hidden in his beard.
These beans were planted in the hills of Chikmagalur in southern India, marking the birthplace of Indian coffee. Today, the region's coffee-growing hills are affectionately known as the Baba Budan Hills in honor of his legacy.
Why is it Called South Indian Filter Coffee?
The name "South Indian Filter Coffee" pays homage to its origins in the southern states of India—Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala—where the majority of the country’s coffee is grown. Once revered as a sacred morning ritual, today, Kaapi (as it's locally known) is enjoyed throughout the day, savored by coffee enthusiasts around the world for its perfect balance of richness and nostalgia.
